FAQs

FAQs – Demonstrators

Do I have to be a “Chemist”?

No. The Organiser will help you find chemistry connections. Demonstrations not normally associated with “Chemistry” increase the students’ awareness of its relevance to other disciplines.

Are Science and Engineering Ambassadors welcome?

Yes. Please inform the Organiser who will record your participation as an active SEA.

Do I have to attend all day?

Yes, normally. Though if a replacement can be found to demonstrate during your absence then partial attendance may be possible.

What does the Demonstrator Training involve?

During the pre-event training morning Derek Jones (Area Organiser) and Maria Pack (National Organiser) cover the students’ level of understanding and offer guidance on how to deliver these short demonstrations effectively, with the aid of the RSC’s training manual. New and experienced demonstrators attend and it always provides a good forum for discussing demonstrators’ personal experiences at these events!

Will I have to provide a risk assessment for my demonstration?

The RSC require risk assessments to be conducted but this is straightforward and the organiser can give you guidance.

Will I be paid expenses?

Subject to funds available, modest expenses, agreed in advance, can be considered.

Are the events open to professional demonstrators?

Yes, professional demonstrators are welcome, but where fees are incured, attendance would be subejct to sponsorship being available from separate commercial or professional sources. Contact the event organiser Derek Jones.

FAQs – Teachers

Can our students attend?

This depends on the event – contact the Organiser.

Is attendance free?

Normally there is a charge but this depends on funding – contact the Organiser.

Can we host a “Chemistry at Work” event at our school?

It may be possible – contact the Organiser.

Will the students receive any written information about the demonstrations?

Yes, a “brochure” outlining each demonstration will be printed in advance for the teachers and copies for the students are available on the day. This is printed in a “leaflet” in the case of events for Junior School children.

What are the arrival and departure times?

All details will be sent out well in advance. If you are unsure contact the Organiser.

Is the event suitable for our students?

All students, from Special School students to Triple Science students, are equally welcome, but please discuss any individual concerns you have with the Organiser well in advance. Separate events are organised for Junior and Secondary School students.

Do you need more demonstrators?

Yes, this is due to the increase in demand for these events. Please ask all would-be demonstrators to contact Derek Jones promptly. This need is national so new demonstrators unable to travel to Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes or Buckinghamshire will be referred to the National Organiser.
